Solving a challenging PSLE Maths problem using the model approach (3)

QN: Lila and Sheela were given some beads. While making necklaces, if Lila uses four times as many beads as Sheela, Sheela will still have 732 beads left when Lila has used all her beads. If Lila uses half as many beads as Sheela, Sheela will still have 221 beads left when Lila has used all her beads.

(a) How many more beads does Sheela have than Lila?

(b) How many beads have they been given altogether?

SOLUTIONS:

(a) Sheela has (732 – 221) / 7 × 4 + 221 = 513 more beads than Lila. (shown)

(b) They have (732 – 221) / 7 × 12 + 221 = 1097 beads altogether. (shown)
