The many benefits of studying in a junior college |

 By Willy Tan Ze Feng Studying in a junior college prepares you well for university education. Furthermore, a set of good results for the 'A' Levels is more likely to open doors to government scholarships (typically 4-6 years bond to the Singapore government) or university scholarships (bond free). Furthermore, various junior colleges also conduct exchange programs. My junior college for example sent students to Cambridge for a month, lodging and food provided. Partially subsidized by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the participating school itself, with the remaining amount raised by the students through fund raising activities. Such activities will greatly improve your standing in the eyes of those reviewing your portfolio, in addition give you meaningful topics to expand upon during your university admissions interview. Several junior colleges have also instituted internship programs during the year- end holidays for outstanding, highly motivated individuals. Students can volunteer at hospitals and private clinics (free or otherwise) to pick up bits of medical skills/knowledge. Such actions will be add value to one's resume and will greatly improve his/her chances for getting into a tertiary institution of his/her choice. A point to note, many banks in Singapore offer education loans - even for overseas universities. Interest rates are low, and you can opt to start paying back only after graduation. Most overseas universities would usually be more than willing to help their students arrange for part-time jobs etc so as to fund other personal expenses. |
