Never let fear of trouble deter you from doing what's right

By eburkefan

I was once told a story regarding some teacher who scooped a fish out of its bowl, before leaving it flopping around and gasping for air on the table whilst one classroom full of wide-eyed children watched on, warning them that anyone who attempted to return the fish back to the waters would be expelled. As expected nobody dared to move an inch, air of frigid, frightened silence hanging overhead.

Tick-tock, tick-tock.....moments that seemed like eternity passed. Then bam, a little girl sprung from her seat and scurried to the table, delicately picked up the poor fish in its presumed final death throes and dropped it into the bowl. Evidently she was the single brave soul who refused to sit idle when something terribly amiss had transpired.

Upon setting foot again in the classroom, the teacher explained how this made for a valuable lesson: never let fear of trouble deter you from doing what's right, ever. If opposing authority or groupthink is the only way you can defend your moral scruples, so be it.

I still occasionally recollect this parable.
